What Is SolarsBay?

March 26, 2008 – 12:58 pm

SolarsBay is a P2P(Peer To Peer) solar energy trading platform. I will explain:

Most of the energy we consume today is derived from fossil fuels. These fuels have several critical drawbacks:

  • Negative effect on our environment - the processing of fossil fuel causes the emission of greenhouse gases. These gases in turn cause unwanted changes in earth climate, as well as different heath problems.
  • Expensive - Prices of energy derived from fossil fuels is constantly on the rise, increasing by 500% over the past 8 years.
  • Non-Renewable - Fossil fuels sources are projected to last only about 50 years from today.

In the past few years, as more and more people, organizations and governments started realizing the possible challenges of relying on fossil fuels as a single energy source, the idea of using cleaner, renewable energy sources became prominent.

Amongst renewable energy sources, solar energy is the most promising. It’s a clean, endless resource of energy. In fact, we have already been using it for hundreds of years, to hit water on our rooftops. But the most important characteristic of solar energy is that we all own it, each and every one of us.

And that is the key factor in the success of solar energy. Since we all have sun over our rooftops and we can capture that energy with solar panels, we all own a resource which has value. But we are not all equal - in some parts of the world the sun is shining 300 days a year, while in other parts it only shines for 50 days. Also, in areas closer to the equator, the amount of energy that reaches the surface of the earth is much greater than in areas closer to the north or south polls. Additionally, since summertime is different in the northern hemisphere (from June-September) than that in the southern hemisphere (December-March), the availability of solar energy is not globally equal throughout the year.

What we are facing is a new market, following the simple rules of supply and demand. There is no doubt about the demand - we all consume and will continue to consume energy. The biggest change is in the supply side - literally billions of people are now potentials solar energy supplier, since they all own a resource which has a huge demand - energy.

And this is the story behind SolarsBay - it allows every one of us to buy and sell solar energy. Since some of us (depending on where they live) have more energy to supply, while others have greater demand (they live in countries where solar energy is hardly available) , the conditions are perfect for a new global market, unique in the sense that sellers are people and not cooperates, making the world a better place to live in by leveraging the full potential of that great energy source we have, the sun.

How Does Solar Energy Trading On SolarsBay Work?

When you first login into SolarsBay trading platform, the system identifies which area in the world you are coming from and allocates an initial amount of Solars (solar energy units) to your account. The amount allocated depends on where you live - if you live in an area with higher exposure to sun (for example, North Africa, Central America, South East Asia, South-Western United States,Australia etc.) you will be allocated a higher number of Solars.

Although everyone is allocated a certain amount of Solars, if you live in areas which have far less exposure to solar energy, it would make sense that you buy Solars from others, with a greater exposure to solar energy. Trading in Solars is done in exchange for U.S. dollars, using eBay auctions - whenever you sell Solars on SolarsBay, an eBay auction is automatically created. If you want to buy Solars, you bid on Solars that are offered through eBay auctions. If you place the highest bid on a Solars auction, you are credited on SolarsBay with these Solars. If you want, you can then re-sell the Solars you bought.

SolarsBay provides you with a comprehensive platform that allows you to buy, sell and re-sell solar energy. You can also easily search for Solars on sale and view your trading history.

Now you ask yourself ‘Why should I buy Solars?’. The answer is that although currently there is no way to transfer solar energy over large distances, it is our believe that such a technology will be available in the near future.

Long Distance Energy Transfer

Transferring energy over long distances is happening all around us. The web page you are reading was transferred to your personal computer’s screen using long distance energy transfer technology. Every time you say something during a long distance phone call, your voice is transformed to energy, that energy travels around the globe and then re-transformed to a voice (this is exactly what modems do : voice-energy-voice transformations). A similar technology will might be applicable for transferring solar energy over long distances - it’s the exact same concepts as transferring phone calls but at much higher energy levels.

The next technology leap will allow us to transfer significantly greater amounts of energy over existing communication lines. When that happens, you will be able to use the Solars you buy-the person you bought the Solars from will supply you with his excessive solar energy, transferred through these communication lines.

Once the medium to transfer solar energy efficiently over long distances will become available, all that needs to be done is to connect solar panels to that communication infrastructure.

At that point, trading solar energy will then become part of our daily lives.

Why buy Solars now? Why not wait until the technology is available?

  • First, we believe that this is a unique chance for regular people, like you and me, to create their own energy market. We hope that when a critical mass of people will start trading solar energy, commercial companies, educational institutions and governments will realize the potential and the importance of such a market and will accelerate research in these areas, research that will lead to the technologies required to support the emerging solar energy market.
  • Second, if you believe that the technology required to facilitate a solar energy market will become available within the next few years, you have a unique opportunity to get into this market early on, when prices are still low. Imagine someone came up to 100 years ago and told you ‘I have hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil in my backyard, I’d like to sell you the rights to that oil’-what would you do?
  • Third, you can resell your Solars. You can sell any Solars you bought-either from another reseller or from the original owner of the Solars.
  • And forth, you can just help make our planet better. The amount of activity in this solar energy market will be an important sign of the interest people have in alternative energy. Every dollar that goes into the market will make it clear that people throughout the world want to use alternative energy. Also, the money you pay for these Solars does not go to large commercial companies - it’s a peer-to-peer market and the money you pay for Solars goes directly to your peer, the person who sold you the Solars. Most solar energy sellers are likely to come from developing countries where solar energy is available most of the year, so it is another way for you to both help the environment as well as people in these countries.

Despite the bad language, I will allow the comment because I think there is a valid argument raised-Is this thing a scam?
It’s not. I guess it’s hard to understand why would anybody want to buy or sell something which is not ‘real’. After all, If I buy from you solar energy and pay you real money, what am I getting now??
If you read the information on SolarsBay, you will understand what is the logic behind selling and buying solar energy now.
I am aware of the fact that the technology does not exist yet, but I believe it’s only a matter of time until that technology will be available, it’s the natural evolution of current global communication infrastructure that is currently moving around data and voice to transfer solar energy.
As for how much money I am making out of it - as you would know if you read the F.A.Q and the different blog posts, you would understand that the trading platform is an interface to eBay’s trading system. Whenever anyone is buying or selling Solars on SolarsBay, an auction is created in eBay. The money used to buy Solars is paid by the buyer to the seller, like any other eBay auction. is eBay-type trading a scam? I don’t know, millions of people do it every day. You don’t buy anything from SolarsBay,you don’t pay anything to SolarsBay, it’s what we call a P2P trading platform.
